An Historic Moment when Rosenior Transcends Boundaries

"Rosenior represents an excellent manager who knows the game inside out, which is the crucial factor.

"However, as the Blues' first black footballer, it would be dishonest if I said this appointment does not affect me."

Those are the words of the former Chelsea winger, who earned his historic first appearance for Chelsea's senior side off the bench in April 1982.

On Tuesday, Chelsea appointed RC Strasbourg boss Liam Rosenior, 41, as their new manager after the departure of Enzo Maresca.

The French club is part of a Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital-owned ownership group that also owns Chelsea.

There have been a mere twelve of African or Caribbean heritage managers – excluding those in temporary caretaker roles – in England's top flight since it began 34 in the past.

"One thing that impresses me regarding Rosenior is he grew up and developed his game not far from here, he knows this area," continued Canoville.

"Whenever youngsters observe a figure like Rosenior managing the team they support, someone who looks like them, who's from their ends, who comes from a family that champions what's right… that's impactful and shows them the path is there.

"Indeed, this represents a massive step for Chelsea, for London, for every aspiring individual with big dreams.

"But right now? We must support Rosenior, provide him with the necessary tools, and allow him to get on with the job."

What Exactly Do the Numbers Reveal?

Dutch legend Ruud Gullit became Chelsea head coach back in the nineties thereby becoming the top flight's inaugural black manager.

Twelve years later, in 2008, Paul Ince was appointed as the pioneering black English boss in the top flight when he took over Blackburn Rovers.

The Hammers' manager Nuno Espirito Santo is the only other present top flight gaffer of colour.

The scarcity of managers of colour across English football is matched by an absence of representation at executive level.

According to a Black Footballers Partnership 2023 study, 43% of top-flight footballers come from African or Caribbean heritage.

However, research by Kick It Out found just 3.2% of executive and leadership positions at 17 of 20 Premier League clubs are held by people from ethnically diverse backgrounds.

At senior coaching positions, according to figures provided by 11 clubs, the figure stands at two percent.

For all coaching positions – encompassing senior roles – from those same eleven clubs, the figure is just five percent.

"He has undoubtedly made history in terms of him being announced as a the Chelsea head coach, and we hope to see more of that," said the chief executive of Kick It Out Samuel Okafor.

"We know that there exists loads of talent that exists in the ethnic minority groups... they want the opportunity to show what they can do. We need to persist in work hard to break those barriers once and for all."

Additionally, the new appointee is set to become the fourth full-time English head coaches presently managing in the top flight – alongside Sean Dyche, Eddie Howe and Scott Parker – a number that lags behind the continent's remaining big five leagues regarding national representation.

Sixteen out of twenty top-flight managers in Italy are Italian, Eleven of the 20 in Spain, Twelve of the 18 in Germany while Ten in Ligue 1 in France.

The present Chelsea caretaker manager Calum McFarlane commented: "I have no doubt all young English coaches from an academy background will be, in some way no matter who you support, supporting Liam.

"It's truly motivating to young English academy coaches to see an individual get such a role with his background and everyone hopes he will be highly successful."

Leroy Rosenior, Liam's father, played for clubs such as Fulham, West Ham as well as Queens Park Rangers, and his managerial career culminating in a five-month spell in charge of then-League One side Brentford FC back in 2006.

In 2019, he received a Member of the Order of the British Empire in the 2019 New Year Honours for services rendered to tackling discrimination within the sport and wider society.

When Rosenior Jr hung up his boots he pursued his father's footsteps. He began penning a column for The Guardian, and in one piece he acknowledged the lack of diversity of black coaches. He highlighted that ethnicity does not determine ability arguing that roles should be given based on qualification.

He further expressed a point he would repeat: how vast lack of diversity leads to a failure to understand regarding footballers with diverse cultural and ethnic heritage.

During an interview with The Athletic FC, he explained the way his leading forward, Emmanuel Emegha, had been described as "hard to manage" or "emotional", but said he understood the Dutch player of Nigerian descent. Emegha is set to follow him in moving from France to Chelsea in July.

In subsequent Guardian columns, he also confessed he was "ashamed" to hear an unnamed staff member utter a homophobic slur. He pledged support for the Premier League's inclusion campaign and wrote a public message to the former US President while he was in office, condemning his "overt" racism.

Rosenior has since built his reputation as a manager – first at Hull City, then Strasbourg – and Wayne Rooney recently stating Rosenior was "as good a coach as I've ever worked with" following their collaboration at Derby County.

The manager bid his farewells at Strasbourg on Tuesday morning prior to putting pen to paper on a long-term contract with the Blues.

The Blues boasted the Premier League's pioneering African heritage boss in Gullit and the first black skipper in Paul Elliott.
